Seeking Knowledge is an essential part of worshipping Allaah subhaanahu wa ta’ala as it helps you stay within the guidelines of Allaah and His Messenger
Although we are at a time when there seems to be information overload on various topics, many Muslims still struggle with basic knowledge about essential religious rites and practices.
Could this be because they do not prioritize knowledge of the deen as they feel it is something a distance away only to be known by the clerics?
Narrated Abu Hurairah:
That the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “Whoever takes a path upon which to obtain knowledge, Allah makes the path to Paradise easy for him.” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2646)
The truth is that we have to invest more time in connecting with our Spirituality and acts of ibaadah (worship) as the happiness we seek from self-actualization lies in our connection with Allaah for Allaah says “verily in the remembrance of Allaah, the hath does find rest.”
One of the greatest remembrance of Allaah is investing our time and resources in having a deep connection with our Lord through seeking knowledge and acting on it.
Narrated Ibn Mas`ud:
“I heard the Prophet (ﷺ) saying, “There is no envy except in two: a person who God has given wealth and he spends it in the right way, and a person whom Allah has given wisdom (ie religious knowledge) and he gives His decisions accordingly and teaches it to the others. ” (Sahih al-Bukhari 1409)
It is thus shocking to see so many “professionals” who are experts in their different fields act and sound clueless when discussions around the Deen is put on the table.
It is almost like investing in something that is sure to collapse. How can you prioritize making a temporary castle on borrowed land over building the best mansion ever on your own eternal land?
This is a wakeup call to everyone who is an expert at anything. Seek knowledge of the deen and enrich your acts of worship with it. Your future self would thank you for it.
Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allaah (saw) said:
“Lo! Indeed the world is cursed. What is in it is cursed, except for remembrance of Allah, what is conducive to that, the knowledgeable person and the learning person.” (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2322)
Invest time in seeking knowledge of the deen as this is where true success lies.
Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “The world, with all that it contains, is accursed except for the remembrance of Allaah that which pleases Allaah; and the religious schools and seekers of knowledge.” (At- Tirmidhi, Riyad as-Salihin Book 13, Hadith 9)
If you are ready to embark on this journey of seeking knowledge then here are some steps you can take to grow;
- Make sincere intentions to grow your knowledge base around matters of the deen to earn the pleasure of Allaah
It is narrated on the authority of Amirul Mu’minin, Abu Hafs ‘Umar bin al-Khattab, radiyallahu ‘anhu, who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, sallallahu alayhi wasallam, say:
“Actions are (judged) by intentions (niyyah), so each man will have what he intended…..”

- Listen to lectures from callers to the deen who call to the way of Allaah based on evidences in the Qur’an and sunnah.
Sahl bin Mu’adh bin Anas narrated from his father that:
The Prophet said: “Whoever teaches some knowledge will have the reward of the one who acts upon it, without that detracting from his reward in the slightest.” (Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol. 1, Book 1, Hadith 240)
- Keep the company of other people working towards serving Allaah better and encourage one another.
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that:
The Prophet said: “The best of charity is when a Muslim man gains knowledge, then he teaches it to his Muslim brother.” (Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol. 1, Book 1, Hadith 243)

اللهم إني أسألك علماً نافعاً، ورزقاً طيباً، وعملاً متقبلاً
‘O Allah indeed I ask you for beneficial knowledge, and a good Halal provision, and actions which are accepted.’
May Allaah forgive you and us and make us of those who remember Him much.
